If anyone is interested in developing their skills in Academic Mentorship, a quick thought based on my experience that might be helpful.
Success on the field starts with discipline off it. As both a soccer coach and academic mentor, I focus on developing the whole student-athlete by aligning athletic goals with academic performance and personal growth.
Tips for Developing This Skill:
• Build Trust Early – Create a culture where players feel supported, not just coached. Academic check-ins should feel like conversations, not evaluations.
• Set Clear Expectations – Align team standards with academic accountability. Treat classroom success as part of the training process.
• Teach Time Management – Help players organize their schedules and set weekly goals, just as they would for technical or tactical improvement.
• Communicate with Educators – Maintain strong relationships with teachers, counselors, and academic support staff to ensure athletes are getting the help they need.
• Celebrate Academic Wins – Recognize GPA boosts, improved study habits, or college prep efforts with the same energy as on-field achievements.
I believe mentoring goes beyond grades—it’s about shaping young people who are prepared to lead in any arena.
